Rasgueado: Up and Down

Up and Down

How to Play the Up and Down Rasgueado (P-AM) for Classical and Flamenco Guitar.

This Rasgueado online tutorial video includes several exercises and close-up views to help you develop your up and down rasgueado (strum) with your right thumb (”P”) and right fingers (M, AM or AMI).

This video will help you develop a balanced sound with a good tone using the correct mechanics. To execute this technique, the fingers and thumb must strum using forearm rotation rather than up and down arm movement. This is a very important note to keep in mind. Be sure to follow my Rasgueado online course to help you with your guitar goals. It is a series of advanced Rasgueado Techniques curated carefully to your needs. Other than that, building consistency in your practice is one of the best ways to improve over time. One habit that makes a big difference is recording your Flamenco and Classical Guitar practice sessions. Listening back—even just once a week—helps you catch details and refine your playing more effectively.

For those working on expressive right-hand techniques, this breakdown of Flamenco and Classical Guitar Rasgueado with Pulgar (Thumb) offers a great way to improve control and articulation.

And if you’re unsure about your tempo in practice, check out this helpful guide comparing Flamenco and Classical Guitar Fast vs. Slow Practice. Understanding when to slow down and when to push the pace can lead to more focused improvement.

For step-by-step support, my Spanish Guitar Mastery course is designed to guide you through foundational techniques and pieces with clarity and structure.

*IMPORTANT: Make sure to avoid unnecessary tension since this will cause injury and give you diminishing results. Always start slowly and loosely; never force technique beyond your tension threshold.* Be sure to check out the other videos in the Rasgueado Series here.
