3-Finger Rasgueado Tutorial by Diego Alonso
The 3-Finger Rasgueado (AMI) is one of the most utilized rasgueados in flamenco and Spanish classical guitar. It is played by extending fingers A (ring), M (middle) and I (index) and often following up the extensions by contracting the “I” finger to create a loop. This rasgueado is often played with clear rhythmic separation between the fingers although a more compact (i.e., less separated) sound can be used as well depending on the guitarist’s aesthetic preference.
In this video, I share examples of the AMI rasgueado and share a few exercises to show you how to play and practice the 3 finger (AMI) rasgueado technique correctly. This video is appropriate for beginner & intermediate students of both flamenco and classical guitar.
After exploring the 3-finger Rasgueado technique, you might find it rewarding to expand your skills by incorporating the 5-finger Rasgueado technique. This progression allows for even more control and speed, helping you create a fuller, more intricate sound.
As you continue to refine your skills, you’ll find that adding the 4-finger Rasgueado technique can offer a different dynamic, helping to enhance your strumming versatility. Each finger adds a new layer of depth, making your technique more fluid and expressive.
Alternatively, for a more simplified starting point, the 2-finger Rasgueado technique offers a solid foundation. It’s a great technique to revisit as it strengthens the basics, giving you the confidence to move on to more advanced methods.
