HOW MY GUITAR CHALLENGESTAUGHT ME A BETTER WAY TO LEARN & TEACH

Have you ever felt like your technique & musicality don’t improve much even though you practice a lot? Or have you made some progress with 1-on-1 lessons, DIY video courses, or method books but still find yourself stuck, confused, or frustrated? 😫

That’s exactly how I felt when I started, and I was convinced that the only solution was to put in more hours and more repetitions. But after 20+ years of playing and teaching, years of formal music education, and a master’s thesis on expert performance and practice strategies, I realized that this isn’t true at all! There’s a MUCH more effective way of reaching your goals than destroying your body with MORE practice!

HOW MY STRUGGLES BEGAN

Like many guitarists, I started out mostly self-taught, eventually studying classical guitar in college and later flamenco in Spain. I was dedicated (and a little obsessed) – taking weekly lessons, practicing regularly, and doing everything I thought I was supposed to do.

But despite my practice time, my playing was frustratingly inconsistent. I’d repeat mistakes between lessons, and I’d hit plateau after plateau, feeling like my technique and musical understanding were stuck in mediocrity. 😵‍💫

Have you had a similar feeling?

My “solution” was completely wrong. I thought the answer was more practice time and more effort. The result was that I DID improve, but I also developed multiple serious injuries and bad habits I later had to undo. And even though I got better technically, it wasn’t as much as I wanted, and I still wasn’t confident about my musicality.

When I started performing professionally, my inconsistent playing resulted in terrible stage fright. My hands would shake, and I would feel sick and extremely nervous on stage.

I knew something was wrong about how I was practicing, but I couldn’t figure out what it was, even though I was following my teacher’s suggestions.

My lessons were good, but one lesson a week just wasn’t enough to catch my mistakes. I needed more than one lesson a week so my teacher could help me catch mistakes sooner and prevent bad habits right away!

What I really needed was guidance between lessons – regular feedback to help me engrain effective practice strategies, understand my music better, and deal with performance anxiety.

I needed what professional athletes have: a practice coach!

SEARCHING FOR SOLUTIONS

Two years in flamenco guitar school in Spain was my first eye-opener to how experts prepare for the stage. After that, I spent 2 more years on a master’s degree where I wrote my thesis on expert practice and performance strategies in flamenco guitar.

Hundreds of hours on scientific research and tons of hours conducting and reading expert interviews taught me a lot!

I learned techniques that help musicians combat performance anxiety, practice strategies that resulted in faster progress with LESS practice time, and tons of other tools that help students be more effective in the practice room! It was super happy! 😁

EXPERIMENTATION AND RESULTS

My next step was to reorganize my practice using my newly found strategies. It was a ton of work, but it paid off more than expected! And after seeing how well it worked for me, I shared the same strategies with my students who, unsurprisingly, got faster & better results with less practice too! This was even true for my busiest students! As long as they got in a little consistent and strategic practice every week, they made noticeable improvement! Yay!

A MORE EFFECTIVE WAY TO LEARN

All of this excitement pushed me to develop a way to help even more students reach their guitar goals more effectively. So after years of work, I launched  Spanish Guitar Mastery; (SGM), an innovative coaching program for flamenco guitar students that’s designed to help you learn, improve, and understand your music better, faster, and more confidently than through traditional 1-on-1 lessons or DIY video courses.

SGM includes everything I wish I had as a student, like feedback from me 5 days/week, 1-on-1 coaching/lessons, progressive learning resources, a private learning community, and plenty of repertoire, technique, & theory instruction to help you develop your guitar skills and musical understanding better and faster than traditional learning methods.

Most importantly, you’ll learn your music through evidence-based practice and performance strategies that make the learning process fun and way more effective than what you’re probably used to.

Whether you just want to play well for fun, are a music student, or are a professional musician, I’m confident that this program can help you play the way you want without the unnecessary struggle.

If you want to learn effective strategies that can help you truly understand, practice, and play flamenco guitar well, SGM is exactly what you need.

SGM COACHING PROGRAMThe Spanish Guitar Mastery Coaching Program offers 6 and 12-month memberships. Private, 1-on-1 lessons are only available for students who are registered in SGM or have completed a 12 month membership.

PROGRESS EXPECTATIONSDespite student testimonials and success stories shared on the SGM website, SGM cannot guarantee that all students will reach the same results since results depend on each student’s dedication to practice, studying lesson material, following practice guidelines, external life factors, and individual differences. SGM’s ideal goal is that each student internalizes basic technique, basic applied theory, and all fundamental practice strategies by the 3 month mark. By 6 months students should have internalized all strategies to a point of independence, developed a solid understanding of rhythm (compás), basic reading (if desired), more advances technique and musicality, and at least 3-4 level-appropriate pieces of music. By 9 months students should have a solid understanding of performance strategies, expressive performance techniques, and should be able to perform at least 3 pieces publicly. By 12 months the student is expected to have a comprehensive understanding of all expert practice and performing strategies needed to develop a piece from zero to a concert performance level. The student is also expected to have developed at least 3-6 pieces of music to a performance level for either classical or flamenco guitar.

INJURY POLICYMusicians usually get injured for 7 reasons: playing too hard, practicing too much, being in a hurry to improve, improper posture, chronic anxiety, playing with excessive tension, and perfectionism. It is imperative to be patient with your progress and play with as much relaxation as possible in your body and mind. Be mindful when practicing and stop immediately at the first sign of pain, discomfort, or fatigue. Address these signs immediately even if you have not reached your recommended or desired practice time.
